Russian iPhone 8 owner sues Apple for pay switch-off, wants fines

UFA, Mar 23 (PRIME) -- A citizen of the Russian city of Izhevsk on the Volga has filed a lawsuit against Apple seeking to make the company resume access to contactless payment service Apple Pay, claim the forfeit per every day, and a 1 million ruble compensation, the press service of the courts of Udmurtia, where the city is located said on Wednesday.

The Oktyabrsky District Court of Izhevsk registered the lawsuit on violation of the consumer rights from the iPhone 8 owner against Apple Rus, which, according to the smartphone package, is the firm in charge of accepting complaints from the consumers.

The plaintiff said that the manufacturer changed the consumer properties of the device by blocking Apple Pay in the country unilaterally that degraded significantly the promised options of the smartphone.

The plaintiff asks the court to oblige Apple Rus to restore work of Apple Pay in the country, pay the penalty of 1% of the price of the device set as of the day of the court decision for every day of delay, and a compensation of 1 million rubles.

The preliminary court hearing is scheduled on April 27.

Pay systems Visa and Mastercard paused their operations on the Russian market on March 10 and services Apple Pay and Google Pay attached to their cards were deactivated.
